The political council of main opposition party New Democracy will convene today in order to evaluate the government’s negotiation efforts and decide upon on the stance it will maintain. New Democracy wants to present itself as a “responsible” political party and that it is willing to participate in a government coalition to keep Greece within the euro.

Party leader Antonis Samaras believes that major political developments will take place by June and as such he wants to prepare and discuss New Democracy’s strategy at the political council meeting that is scheduled for 2pm on Friday. The overall sentiment is to avoid a falling out with the country’s creditors by all means, fearing catastrophic consequences for the economy and society.

Mr. Samaras recently told Bloomberg that it would be catastrophic if Greece were to leave the euro. As such, New Democracy will support government initiatives that will work towards an agreement with the creditors, but will denounce any policies which it believes will harm Greece’s prospects. With the government seemingly unable to come to an agreement with creditors and time running out, the main opposition leader believes that anything is possible, including a credit event.

Finally, the upcoming discussion for SYRIZA’s proposal over the formation of a committee to investigate what lead Greece to the bailouts is more than likely to be discussed at New Democracy’s political council meeting.
