The Minister of Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Panagiotis Lafazanis met with activists who oppose the mining operations taking place in Halkidiki, which included the president of the Ierissos municipal council.

In the meeting, the activists claimed that Hellenic Gold, the firm carrying out the mining operations in Halkidiki, is invoking questionable legislative decisions and licenses of the previous government in order to create a fait accompli in Skouries.

Furthermore they presented a report regarding the tragic consequences that the mining operations are having on the environment and public health in the area, while stressing the greater impact on growth and production.

Mr. Lafazanis stated that he is prepared to examine the mining operations in order to defend the rule of law, the environment and public interest, in accordance with the government’s proclamations. To that end, he promised to take all appropriate measures and decisions.
