Two police officers were wounded in Chania, Crete on Monday during a routing inspection at a roadblock, when the driver of a car opened fire against them.

According to preliminary reports the shooting took place at Vryses, near Chania. The driver was asked to stop for an inspection and appears to have drawn a weapon – possibly a shotgun – and fired against the two officers before escaping.

One of the officers was seriously injured in the head from the buck shots, while the other received lighter injuries in the leg. Both were quickly taken to the Chania hospital to receive treatment.

The flashnews.gr news portal ahs reported that the shooter – who appears to have been known to the local authorities – has been arrested after a police operation.
