The coalition government is considering introducing even greater discounts for the controversial ENFIA real estate tax which it recently introduced, in response to the fierce reactions from government officers.

The final proposals are to be submitted in Parliament on Thursday, with the coalition government considering increasing the discount for non-electrified property above 30% and increasing the number of installments. Whether these will be enough however to bring some calm to the government remains to be seen.

The Minister of Finances Gikas Hardouvelis, who is to attend for Milan today to attend the Eco/Fin and Eurogroup sessions, appears to be rather upset, as he drew the ire of many government and opposition MPs, for a tax which he argues he had not prepared.

The federation of property owners POMIDA has argued that the ENFIA has resulted in “the complete depreciation of private property in our country” and warned that government revenue would suffer due to the heavy taxation; foreign and domestic investors alike are dissuaded from the high taxes, while construction has all but collapsed.
