The decision of DIMAR leader Fotis Kouvelis to accept SYRIZA’s invitation regarding the referendum over the privatization of DEI has caused some turmoil within the party, as DIMAR’s Parliamentary Group and Executive Committee convene on Monday.

The Parliamentary Group and Executive Committee will convene at 11am on Monday in order to ratify Mr. Kouvelis’ decision to support the main opposition’s party initiative to carry out referendum over DEI’s privatization. In order for the referendum to go through, SYRIZA needs 120 MP votes.

With DIMAR struggling to recover from a disastrous electoral in May, some within the party estimate that Mr. Kouvelis’ decision will harm the party’s independence as it will appear to be dependant on SYRIZA. The party’s leadership however maintains that the privatization is a critical matter and argues that the initiative is unrelated to SYRIZA’s other pursuits, such as the election of President.

Amongst the more dissatisfied DIMAR officers is Spyros Lykoudis who is rumored to reject the referendum proposal. Grigoris Psarianos, who has been included in a committee of The River, has also expressed his decision to reject the proposal and has distanced himself from DIMAR.
