New Democracy MP Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was the first to announce his candidacy in the upcoming part election, admitted that his surname may prevent some from voting for him.

In an interview on ANT1, Mr. Mitsotakis noted that he was troubled by how his name would come into play, but ultimately decided to push forward, irrespective of what the other candidates will do.

Mr. Mitsotakis also underlined the need for an honest discussion over what went wrong with New Democracy, which has been in a “gradual decline since 2009” and has pushed young voters and productive classes away. In any case, he argued that his party would come out stronger from having a public discussion.

Regarding his sister, Dora Bakoyanni, who is also rumored to consider running for the party leadership, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that despite their differing opinions on politics and how the party must be run, they have a “very good personal relationship” and stressed that any differences must be “de-dramatized”.
