The Minister of Justice Nikos Paraskevopoulos announced that a “corrective legislative intervention” is being prepared to address the educational leaves for prison inmates.

Mr. Paraskevopoulos explained that “humanizing prison and educating prisoners is the best protection against crime” and underlined that the introduction of electronic tagging for prison inmates will allow them to study from a distance.

According to the Minister, the legislative amendment that is being planned will address situations where a prison inmate is also on trial for other cases, such as in the case of Nikos Romanos, who was recently denied educational leave.

The Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens is currently occupied by anarchists, in solidarity towards Romanos.
