The outgoing provisional president of New Democracy Evangelos Meimarakis has arranged to meet with former party leaders and Prime Ministers Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras over the weekend, ahead of the elections for a new party president.

According to an article in Ta Nea, the meeting with the two former New Democracy presidents may determine whether Mr. Meimarakis will run for the party leadership. With many Karamanlis supporters already supporting a potential Meimarakis candidacy suggest that the provisional leader may soon announce his plans for the party presidency.

Whether Mr. Meimarakis runs for the party leadership or not will also determine the total number of candidates. So far a number of potential candidates – such as Nikos Dendias and Dora Bakoyanni – have noted that they will support Mr. Meimarakis, should he decide to run.

Younger officers, such as Vasilis Kikilias, Olga Kefalogianni and Makis Voridis, who are rumored to consider running in the party elections, are also waiting to see Mr. Meimarakis’ plans before making any decisions.

Meanwhile, New Democracy’s election committee will convene on Thursday in order to finalize the timetables of the election process.
