The President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos praised the ‘superhuman’ efforts of the Police in the refugee crisis, during his meeting with the caretaker Minister of Public Order Antonis Makrydimitris.

According to the President the refugee crisis is not just a matter of security, but also a matter of humanism and respect for human rights, as evident by the situation on Mytilene.

Furthermore, Mr. Pavlopoulos stressed that meaningful cooperation with European institutions is necessary and noted the importance of the recent visit of the European Commission’s Timmermans and Avramopoulos.

The President explained that the current crisis stems from the flames of war in the Middle Eat, particularly Syria and underlined that unless the apathy ends, then people will continue to be uprooted and forced away from their homes.

As the recent European initiative to address the migration crisis has largely been considered insufficient, Mr. Pavlopoulos commented that a European Summit must called, in order to find a more appropriate solution.
