The Laboratory of Demographic and Social Analyses (LDSA) of the University of Thessaly has published a study on the trends and prospects of the population in Greece.
The study, which was published in the 25th edition of the Demographic News periodical, shows how the average age in Greece has increased over time, from 29 years in 1951 to 43 years in 2014, while fertility rates have dropped.
As a result of the trends documented in the LDSA’s study, the population of Greece will drop by about 300,000 to 400,000 by 2025, with the number of deaths exceeding that of births and more people leaving the country than arriving.
By 2024 about 22% of the population in Greece will be over the age of 65, while 15% may be over the age of 85 year sold. This average age is also expected to exceed 45 years by 2025.
The full study, in Greek, is available online.
An abstract, in English, of the study is also available online.
