A preliminary investigation has been launched by the District Attorney of Athens, in response to events that took place at the OAKA basketball stadium on Saturday, at the Panathinaikos -Olympiacos derby, which saw the Reds win 66-77.

The game was temporarily suspended about a minute and a half before the end, when Olympiacos captain Vasilis Spanoulis scored a three-point shot and celebrated with a “I can’t hear you” gesture and grabbed his ears. This prompted an invasion from about 40 Panathinaikos hooligans, who interrupted the game for about half an hour.

A video which surfaced later that night on the official website of Olympiacos, documents what appears to be Panathinaikos’ former chairman Dimitris Giannakopoulos outside the visiting team’s locker-room hurling abuse towards Spanoulis. The man alleged to be Mr. Giannakopoulos can be heard wishing Spanoulis’ wife and unborn child to die.
