The debts towards DEI from unpaid bills have increased to a critical level over the past couple months, forcing the company to employ legal firms in an effort to collect.

According to the official data published by the power company, the outstanding debts towards DEI at the end of October amounted to 1.69 billion euros. The data also shows an upward trend of unpaid power bills.

As such, the debts towards the power company are expected to increase in December. Some fear that the debts towards the power company may soon reach 2 billion euros.

The unpaid power bills do not just affect DEI though, as a number of their parties – such as local government and the public television network NERIT – are paid via municipal taxes and contribution incorporated in the electricity bills.
