The first impressions of yesterday’s vote in Parliament lead to the conclusion that the chances of this Parliament electing a President are dramatically reduced. The people may tell the polls that they want this Parliament to elect a President, but the members of Parliament believe otherwise. Unless something dramatic occurs, elections seem the likeliest probability, in this deadlock that will occur.

The minute potential of an understanding, which would avert the prolongation of the political uncertainty and all of its potential effects, seem to have totally eclipsed, since all the opposition parties insist on elections. It is clear then, if these predictions are confirmed, that the country will enter a polarized political conflict, where the climate of instability will further entrench itself and will halt any potential of an economic recovery.

It is time for the political forces to assume responsibilities and protect the country’s credibility and stability. The Presidential election process has caused enough problems already, let us not make them worse. It is no coincidence that after a long time the interest of international media is once again focused on Greece.

Now that there is still time, the pointless statements intended to galvanize political audiences and which cause negative reactions from the European and the markets must come to an end. After five years of painful sacrifices that country has finally reached a crucial turning point. An unlimited and irrational election campaign conflict, like the ones which we unfortunately we have come accustomed to in recent years, will not benefit anyone, much less the country, the economy and the people who suffer.

In the country that taught the world the sense of measure, it is absurd for the political leadership to accept the logic of insisting to put party interests over national interests. If they cannot come to an agreement on the obvious – according to the people – issues, then in the next few critical weeks they must at least ensure that if a President is not elected, that we will head to elections with out any obscenities and screaming, with the least possible impact of the country’s progress.
