The local authorities of the District of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace remain vigilant for the tenth consecutive day, in order to address any possible floods in Evros.

According to the latest update, about 110,000 hectares of land in Evros have been flooded due to the swelling of Evros River. The Deputy District Governor Dimitris Petrovits told the Athens-Macedonia News Agency that the efforts are focused on the southern parts of Evros.

Mr. Petrovits added that the water level of the river Evros is above warning levels and is causing concern. He explained that initiatives were taken in order to avoid any further floods near the base of the river. With a state of emergency declared in the region, the Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias has instructed the Arm to assist in all efforts to tackle the floods.

The chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff Lt. General Christos Manolas visited the area on Saturday and discussed the issues at hand with the Deputy Minister of Education Alexandros Dermentzopoulos, the District Governor Giorgos Pavlidis, the Mayor of Orestiada, as well as local police and fire brigade representatives.
