The District Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Giorgos Pavlidis has requested from the Ministry to declare a state of emergency in the areas of Vyssa, Kyprinos, Orestiada, Trigono, Didymoteicho, Metaxades, Orfeas, Soufli, Tychero and Feres, due to the major floods .

The local Civil Protection Coordinating Body (SOPP) has found that about 80,000 acres of land have flooded after levees on the Evros and Erythropotamos rivers broke. Local services have agreed o increase their efforts in order to avert further flood damages.

On Tuesday evening the Bulgarian authorities informed the Greek embassy in Sofia that the Ivailovgrad damn has overflowed, with excess volumes of water expected to swell the Arda River.

Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall that continues in northern parts of Greece has caused problems in Thessaloniki, Kilkis and Halkidiki. Flights at the “Macedonia” airport were affected, while the Fire Brigade received numerous calls for flooded basements and vehicles. Road traffic on major arteries has also been interrupted in certain areas, with traffic police diverting drivers to alternate routes.
