The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s School of Philosophy has issued a statement expressing its “major objection and deep concern” over a recent provision that was submitted in Parliament, regarding the equivalence of college degrees, even ones awarded outside the EU, with those awarded by Greek universities.

According to the statement, the major points of concern are that the college students are not selected via nationwide examinations and that the colleges are not evaluated by the independent body that certifies higher education institutions and their courses.

Furthermore, colleges operate exclusively as teaching centers, eschewing all research, which is considered an integral part of academic teaching. Additionally, the statement argues that the teachers at colleges are often temporary and paid hourly, which suggests that they cannot compare with university professors, who are chosen based on strict criteria and skills.
