According to a survey that was presented at an event for the European Antibiotics Awareness Day, Greeks consume more antibiotics than anyone else in Europe, followed by the French and Italians.

The survey shoes that about one in four Greeks takes antibiotics without a medical prescription, which are often “left over” from a prior medical condition. The abuse of antibiotics can result in germs become more resilient to antibiotics.

The data also showed that one in two adults took antibiotics last year, with 16% admitting they took it without a prescription and 10% revealing the medication had been left over from a prior illness.

Of the 25% of respondents who used antibiotics only 6% later asked for a medical prescription. About 36% of respondents stated that they always have antibiotics at home in case of an emergency.
