The total contribution of coastal shipping to the Greek economy in 2013 has been estimated to be about 11.8 billion euros, or about 5.6% of the GDP, according to a report published by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research.

The report, which was presented on Tuesday at the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, shows that the shipping sector also employed 260,000, which amounts to 7.2% of total employment and about half of those employed in island prefectures.

The Minister of Shipping Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and the president of the Association of Passenger Shipping Companies (SEEN) Michalis Sakellis were present at the event.
