The 40-year-old former wife of a ship-owner who was arrested in June over her suspected involvement in a heroin cartel has submitted an application for bail, claiming to have been unaware of the narcotics recovered from her home.

In the police operation that took place in June, about one ton of heroin was found in the 40-year-old woman’s luxury home in Philothei. At the time, her 15-year-old son was also suspected of having bee involved, due to text messages sent from his mobile phone.

In her application for bail the defendant claims to have been unaware of the heroin being stored at her home, which she blames on a foreign man. She also argues that her remand in prison has had a profound effect on her son’s life. Furthermore, a high-ranking Coast Guard officer has expressed doubts as to her involvement in the case.

So far about 30 individuals face serious charges in relation to the case, including the aforementioned 41-year-old ship-owner Efthymios Giannousakis who denies all charges, a number of middlemen who helped transfer the narcotics through the Persian Gulf and a ship captain who worked for a Dubai-based shipping company.
