The new Minister of National Defense is going to be Nikos Dendias, who will be replaced at the Ministry of Growth by MP Kostas Skrekas. Mr. Dendias will be replacing the outgoing Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, who will assume his duties at the European Commission on Monday.

The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and the outgoing Minister of National Defense Dimitris Avramopoulos have arranged a meeting a 2.30pm on Friday. The two men are planning on discussing the next Minister of National Defense.

Initially it had rumored that the Prime Minister may assume the ministerial role, however this – along with ideas of a new cabinet reshuffle – was later abandoned after yesterday’s meeting with government VP Evangelos Venizelos. It was decided that the new Minister would be a New Democracy MP from the “Karamanlis” camp.

Mr. Avramopoulos is expected to officially resign from his ministerial position by Saturday midday. Mr. Dendias will be sworn in on Monday, when President Karolos Papoulias returns from Giannena. Mr. Avramopoulos’ seat in Parliament will be taken up by New Democracy’s first runner up, Thanos Plevris.
