The leader of the Democratic Left Fotis Kouvelis gave a press conference at noon on Wednesday at the Thessaloniki International Fair, where he addressed rumors regarding the upcoming Presidential election

In his speech, Mr. Kouvelis denied recent rumors suggesting that he will run for President in the next year’s election. Mr. Kouvelis noted that “there has been no deal, in secret or in the open. I therefore request, even from my comrades in DIMAR, to not mention my name in relation to the Presidential matter”.

Additionally he argued that the country has a President until January and that he will not let personal criteria or current developments for the country affect how he responds to the matter. Furthermore, Mr. Kouvelis stressed hat the election of a President demands a broad consensus through an increased majority, which in turn depend on the implemented policies.

Mr. Kouvelis is the latest politician rumored to be offered support from the coalition government in order to ensure an election early next year, when current President Karolos Papoulias‘ tenure is scheduled to end. Failure to elect a new President will trigger early general elections, which is a goal of the main opposition party SYRIZA.

The DIMAR leader also addressed Greece’s public debt, which he claimed is not sustainable and argued that it is necessary to negotiate a restructuring.
