With only a few days left until children all over Greece are set to return to school for the new academic year, the Ministry of Education is rushing to cover the teacher gaps, with most staff shortfalls noted in all-day and special schools.

So far the Ministry has announced the recruitment of 3,000 substitute teachers and is currently allocating them in order to cover the needs of schools. According to a report in Ta Nea, nurseries and schools have covered their needs by 65% and 66.4% respectively.

The newspaper report details that a further 2,000 replacement teachers are to be recruited by Wednesday in order to cover additional needs. All-day schools so far are experiencing the greatest problems, with afternoon programs being particularly hit by the teacher shortages. The schools are set to open Thursday the 11th of September.
