The Greek national basketball team scored its third victory in the FIBA World Cup on Monday evening by defeating Puerto Rico 90-79 and has qualified to the Round of 16.

Thanks to a very strong start in the first quarter, the Greek team managed to surprise Puerto Rico and quickly set the tone of the game. Puerto Rico fought back though back and even managed to take a three-point lead early on the second quarter.

Thanks to a strong defense though and some critical shots, Greece took the lead by half-time. Fotis Katsikaris’ squad carried on in the third quarter, setting the foundations for its third consecutive victory in the competition. With Zisis, Bourousis, Antetokounmpo and Kaimakoglou at top performance, Greece increased the difference to 19 points near the end of the third quarter.

Despite their valiant efforts in the final quarter though, the Puerto Ricans were unable to keep up with Greece and conceded their third defeat in the competition. Greece faces Croatia on Wednesday and Argentina on Thursday, before the Round of 16, which begins on Saturday.
