The Coast Guard has issued a statement, detailing how it rescued a total of 42 migrants in two rescue operations which took place near Agathonisi and Kos.
According to the report, the Coast Guard first located in the maritime area north of Agathonisi a boat carrying 21 migrants. The migrants jumped overboard and were rescued by the Coast Guard patrol.
A further 21 migrants were later located on an abandoned ship, which was drifting about five nautical miles from the island of Kos. The Coast Guard reported that in both cases all migrants were rescued.
The Minister of Shipping Miltiadis Varvitsiotis is going to give a press conference on Thursday to highlight the increased waves of migration.
