The government Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos was on an official visit to the USA, where he was scheduled to meet with high ranking officials. Mr. Venizelos repeated that government’s top priority in its upcoming EU presidency is to establish maritime zones. The Vice President will further discuss this critical matter during his official visit in Tirana in October.

Mr. Venizelos explained that his discussions with head of the US State Department John Kerry and the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Davutoglu were dominated by the emergent Golden Dawn situation and tackling fascism. The Vice President reported that there was an overall satisfaction with the government’s handling of the situation.

Regarding the Cypriot matter, Mr. Venizelos stressed that the Greek side considers any potential solution must be decided by the island’s two communities through a referendum. He also asserted that the discovery of hydrocarbons (natural gas and oil) in the region will play an important role in the diplomatic stability of the greater Mediterranean.
