The ceremony for the 2014 State Literary Awards took place on Sunday at the Danaos cinema in Athens, with the Minister of Culture Aristides Baltas commenting that “books are still entirely necessary, even in the worst financial circumstances, so that we may carry on as civilized people”.

The awards for 2014 are as follows:

Grand Prize of Literature: Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke

Novel Award: Dimitris Nollas

Short Story/Novella Award: Kostas Mavroudis

Poetry Award: Panos Kyparissis

Essay/Critique Award: Vaso Alexandraki

Testimony/Biography/Chronicle/Travel Literature Award: Giorgos B. Dertilis

Newcomer Award: Lefteris Kalospyros and Eleftheria Kyritsi

Promotion of Dialog on Socially Sensitive Issues Award: Alexandros Stefanidis

Translation of Foreign Literature into Greek Award: Giorgos Blanas

Translation of Greek Literature into a Foreign Language: Birgit Hildebrad

Additionally, the committee awarded the Mandaragoras and Themata Logotechnias periodicals for their contribution to modern Greek literature.
