The Ministry of Interior in Athens has requested humanitarian assistance from the European Union, in order to address the ‘unstable situation’ caused by the huge influx of migrants and refugees from the Middle East and Africa that arrive on Greek shores on a daily basis.

According to a Reuters report, the Greek Ministry has asked for the EU to activate its civil protection and crisis response mechanisms, as well as medical staff, medicine, clothing and equipment in order to address the dramatic situation on the Aegean islands. The EU’s civil protection mechanism has previously assisted Greece is tackling forest fires.

The Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and the Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos who recently visited Greece have so far pledged 33 million euros to address the refugee crisis.
