The employees of Hellenic Gold at the mines in Halkidiki are escalating their protest actions against the temporary closure of the controversial mining operations by blocking the Stratoni-Ierissos and Gomati-Plana junctions.
Closure of these junctions means that road access to the northern Greek towns of Ierissos, Ouranoupoli, Nea Roda and Athonas has effectively been cut off. The miners have allowed cars to go by, in order to decongest the traffic.
The president of employees working in the Kassandra mines Christos Zafeiroudas told the Athens-Macedonia News Agency that their goal is to protest and inform the public of their demands, not burden them.
