The main opposition party New Democracy has accused Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of using the possibility of general elections as a means of overcoming his inter-party problems.

Furthermore it criticized the government for perpetuating the political uncertainty that is aggravating the Greek economy, while ignoring pressing matters, such as the refugee crisis in the Aegean.

Many within New Democracy believe that the Prime Minister is geared towards calling snap elections and as provisional leader Evangelos Meimarakis will begin talks with party officials to make relevant preparations.

Meanwhile former party leader Antonis Samaras estimates that New Democracy along with the River and PASOK could form a coalition alliance in the upcoming elections, to ensure they receive the 50-seat bonus that would allow them to govern without further alliances.

Although Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed the idea, many within New Democracy have outright rejected such a prospect, including the party’s provision leader.
