According to the Kerkyra prison guard report no inspections had been carried out for two months in the entire wing where 21 convicts dug a tunnel, via which they were planning on escaping. The escape was averted over the weekend thanks to a dog.

The prison guard report also notes that the cell doors in the particular wing remained open “because it was hot”. No inspections had been carried out since the 18th of June, after prisoners complained about the “oppressive” behavior of prison guards. The prisoner alleged to have planned the escape had previously attempted to escape via tunnel from the Korydallos prison in 2011.

The police reported that the 21 prisoners involved had managed to dig out about 30 cubic meters of dirt, which they compacted and stored in their prison cells. According to investigating officers, they chose to store the dirt in their cells since the courtyard was paved with cement and they would have been discovered immediately.
