The Parliamentary Group of the main opposition, New Democracy, has arranged to convene under provisional party president Evangelos Meimarakis on Thursday morning, in order to debate and decide upon the stance at the critical vote on the bailout agreement.

The Provisional party leader has decided to support the government’s bailout agreement in Thursday’s critical vote and warned that any MPs voting otherwise may face expulsion. Mr. Meimarakis stressed that voting otherwise would signify a change in European strategy.

Earlier, at an informal expanded political council meeting on Wednesday, Mr. Meimarakis successfully argued that New Democracy should support Greece’s European course, without however neglecting to scrutinize the government’s actions.

While the main opposition party has previously supported votes towards a bailout, there is a growing number of MPs who believe that New Democracy should abstain from tonight’s proceedings.
