The Mayor of Kos Giorgos Kyritsis has appealed for immediate assistance from the government in order to tackle the exacerbating migration situation on the island, warning that “blood will be shed and the situation will get out of hand”.
According to Mr. Kyritsis there are over 7,000 migrants on the island who entered Greece illegally and underlines that the local authorities are unable to address the problems that have emerged.
Mr. Kyritsis called the government to transfer many of the 7,000 migrants elsewhere and requested that police special forces be deployed on the island to prevent extreme situations.
The mayor also denounced the identification procedures as with an estimated 600 to 800 new arrivals on a daily basis it is virtually impossible to carry out identification and protect maritime borders.
