The men’s national water polo team won the bronze medal after a tense game against Italy (11-9 in the penalties) in the 16th FINA World Championships that took place in Kazan, Russia. In the grand final Serbia defeated traditional rivals Croatia 11-4.
Although Greece led the game for most of the time, Italy managed to turn the score from 7-5 to 7-7, bringing it to a draw during regular time. In the penalty shootout that followed the Greek team’s aim was truer and the final score was 11-9.
This is the second time that the national tam has received a medal on an international level, having also won the bronze medal in the 2005 World Aquatics Championships that were held in Montreal, Canada in 2005. Saturday’s has also secured participation in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
