Popular folk lyricist Kostas Virvos passed away late on Thursday evening in his home in Paleo Faliro, at the age of 88 years old. Virvos had been suffering from a number of health issues and recently a serious stroke.

The Trikala-born Virvos had been known to write lyrics early on, but intended to become a director, as he was infatuated by the theater. During the German Occupation he joined the National Resistance as an EAM member and was arrested in March of 1944 and was tortured. His experiences during WWII, the German Occupation and his imprisonment had a significant influence on his writing.

Virvos wrote over 2,000 songs and collaborated with many prominent musicians and artists of his era such as Markos Vamvakaris, Apostolos Kaldaras, Mimis Plessas and Grigoris Bithikotsis. Aside from his songs, he also authored three books, including an autobiography.
