A transgendered woman was verbally assaulted and shot at in Athens, in the near vicinity of the Traffic Police HQ and Golden Dawn offices, at around 6am on Thursday.

According to the report, a heavyset man, aged about 35-40, began berating and verbally assaulting the victim, after noticing she was trangendered. When the victim responded to the verbal abuse, the man opened fire, possibly with a hunting rifle, wounding her in the legs, thighs and near the genitals.

The wounded victim made it to the Traffic Police HQ, where a female officer on duty provided first aid and called for an ambulance. The victim reportedly praised the traffic police officers for their overall attitude. After being taken to a central hospital in Athens, the victim underwent surgery to remove shrapnel.

The Transgender Support Association issued a statement condemning the attack and warning that transphobia and hate crimes based on gender and sexual identity are on the rise and called authorities to take the necessary initiatives.
