The police discovered 93 migrants – including 19 minors – stowed on board a freight train that had arrived at Idomeni, Kilkis from Hungary on Wednesday. The authorities were alerted after one of the migrants phoned it to the European emergency hotline (112).

According to the migrants, most of whom are Syrians, they each paid 500 euros to a human trafficker to travel from Gevgelija in FYROM to Serbia, from where they would attempt to cross over to central and northern European countries where they have relatives. However, they were fooled by the trafficker, who placed them on board a freight train traveling to Thessaloniki in Greece instead.

Upon inspection, all of the migrants – apart from one – had official documents allowing them to stay in Greece, indicating that they had previously crossed over from Greece to make it to Gevgelija in FYROM. The documents do not allow them to approach border prefectures, such as Kilkis, so they have been sent back to the country’s interior, while the migrant without documents will be deported.
