The Ministry of Interior has issued a letter to the regional governor proposing the creation of open hospitality centers for migrants, which would be financed by NSRF funds. Creating and providing open hospitality centers for migrants is a major priority for the government, both to safeguard the rights of migrants and to provide security to the Greek people, according to the letter.

The goal is to implement a policy that will prevent hug hospitality center popping up over night, without the local community first being consulted, nor will the migrants be left to fend for themselves in urban centers. As such, the Ministry proposes the fair and proportionate distribution of migrants across all districts.

According to the Ministry’s proposal, the cost per migrant would be less than 11 euros per day (less than the unemployment benefit in Greece), with the total cost per migrant being 22,082 euros for 5.5 years. Aside from housing and medical care, asylum seekers would also receive lessons in Greek, access to interpreters and travel cards.

The full proposal (in Greek) is available online.
