The Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will receive the leader of the Movement of Democrats Socialists Giorgos Papandreou at his office at Maximos Mansion at 1pm on Thursday, to discuss recent developments in Greece. According to a report by SKAI, the arrangements for the meeting were made a few weeks ago.

The meeting has is taking place only a few days after Mr. Papandreou appeared to publicly support the government in the ongoing negotiations. Mr. Papandreou gave an interview to Kriti TV, where he was highly critical of Evangelos Venizelos and Antonis Samaras, accusing the former of not supporting him and contributing towards his government being overthrown and the latter for avoiding the implementation of reforms.

Additionally, the former Prime Minister urged the government to work towards an “honest compromise” and to disregard the political cost, stressing that the Greek people must be aware that a large part of SYRIZA’s election pledges cannot be implemented. According to Mr. Papandreou, the negotiations are not only with the partners, but the markets as well.

In his interview, Mr. Papandreou concedes that his “one mistake” was not insisting upon the referendum in 2011, when he was faced with the prospect of requesting assistance from the IMF. He claims that if it was carried out, he would have the necessary popular mandate to carry out the changes and reforms that were required.
