The two coalition government partners, SYRIZA and the Independent Greeks, have disagreed on provisions contained in a reform bill that aims to abolish the controversial “Type C” maximum security prison facilities.

The Independent Greeks rapporteur Nikos Mavraganis stated that his party disagrees with provisions regarding the conditional early release and favorable calculation of sentence for certain categories of prisoners.

The Minister of Justice Nikos Paraskevopoulos argued that the conditions in Greek prison are “dramatic” and on the way to become the worst in Europe. Mr. Paraskevopoulos added that there are 191 outstanding cases against Greece at the European Courts, over prison conditions.
