The Police are considering the possibility of organized crime being involved in the recent escape of Vicky Stamati from the Dromokaitio Psychiatric Hospital, where she was held for the past 14 months.

Mrs. Stamati’s escape has troubled the authorities, as it seems that she had access to a key to unlock the balcony door, while the shutters in her room were open, despite hospital security regulations stipulating that they should be shut. None of the locks appear violated, suggesting that Mrs. Stamati was assisted in her escape and that there was also a plan to hide her.

In a previous investigation it appears that her husband, the former Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos, came into contact with major criminals and crime bosses while in Korydallos. As such, the police are examining the possibility of organized crime being involved in Mrs. Stamati’s escape.

The four prison guards who were tasked with guarding her have been questioned by the police. The police are now examining records of her behavior and associations in the hospital over the past few months. Mrs. Stamati was allowed a mobile phone, against prison regulations, which may have been used to organize her escape.

Meanwhile, the president of the hospital employees Michalis Yiannakos and the president of the prison guards Yannis Anagnostou blamed each other for Mrs. Stamati’s escape. Mr. Anagnostou insisted that the hospital was responsible for the safekeeping of the keys, while Mr. Yiannakos argued that it was “shameful” to blame the nursing staff.
