The 60-year-old Athina Tsakalou, mother of Christos and Gerasimos Tsakalos who were convicted for their participation in the Conspiracy of Fire Cells group, has refused her conditional release from remand.

Mrs. Tsakalou explained that she will not leave until the 26-year-old partner of her son Gerasimos, who was also detained on similar charges, is also granted a release from remand.

In a letter posted on Indymedia, Mrs. Tsakalou estimated that the judiciary “can turn the world in a Kafkaesque hell” and heavily criticized the role of the media. She also lamented that she will always be held “accountable” because “like all mothers and fathers of my age, we did not manage to pass on a better world to our sons and daughters”.

In concluding her letter, Mrs. Tsakalou expressed her support for the imprisoned hunger strikers and vowed to remain in prison until she can leave with the 26-year-old partner of her son.

The 26-year-old woman’s attorneys have stressed in their application for release that the case file against her does not include any evidence to suggest she was involved in illegal activities related to a foiled prison escape plan, that involved Christodoulos Xiros.

Furthermore, the 26-year-old notes that she met her partner when she was a student of psychology in Thessaloniki and has never been involved in any criminal activities, nor had her imprisoned partner ever request that she carry out any such activities.
