The body of the infamous escaped crocodile, nicknamed “Sifis” by the media, was located on Sunday evening, near the river dam near Rethymno in Crete where it was recently discovered. It appears that the reptile succumbed to the harsh weather conditions that dominated this winter.

On Monday a team of scientists from the Museum of Natural History and local authorities collected the body of “Sifis”, in order to further investigate the origin of the crocodile, while will perhaps help determine how it ended up in the river dam and how it managed to survive.

“Sifis the Crocodile” became an online sensation after a video circulated on the Internet showing the crocodile swimming in the artificial river in Crete. Experts and herpetologists were called out to try to capture the crocodile, as it posed a threat to locals, but repeatedly failed. Local residents, who were captivated by crocodile, even petitioned to keep «Sifis» on-site, citing his popularity with tourists.
