A migrant rescue operation is currently under way in Orestiada in the north of Greece, after a group of about 50 people – mostly women and children – were located.

The migrants were located by Greek authorities early on Friday morning, in boats on an embankment of the river Evros, where it appears they were abandoned by a trafficker.

A rescue operation was launched soon after, with the migrants being transferred to Pythio, where ambulances and firefighters are awaiting to provide them with first aid, as the weather conditions are adverse.

Following their registration, the migrants will be taken the detention centers.
