Gun shots were heard in the downtown Athens area of Petralona shortly after 7am Monday morning, when two men attempted to rob a super-market and were confronted by the police.

Three men entered the super-market from the store’s supply area and headed towards the office where the takings are kept. A store employee noticed them and hit the alarm, with the police responding immediately.

As the three men noticed the police they threatened the super market employees. A coffee delivery employee, who happened to be in the super-market at the time, panicked and reportedly pleaded with the three suspects.

The three suspects attempted to escape on a motorcycle and fired shots towards the police, which is said to have responded and fired back. One of the three suspects was captured as he was trying to escape by breaking into a home, while a second was caught nearby pretending to be the victim of a traffic accident.

The second arrested man was taken to the hospital where doctors treated him for a gunshot wound he likely received in the exchange with the police.
