People who are facing serious financial crime charges in Greece have begun ceding real estate property to the Greek state, in an effort to achieve a more favorable treatment in court.

According to a report in Ta Nea, people who are charged with serious financial crimes and face heavy prison sentences have begun ceding real estate property to the State as a “good will gesture”.

In recent times the former Mayor of Thessaloniki was initially given a life term sentence for embezzling public funds. The hope is that the judicial authorities will take the cession of property into consideration and reduce or even suspend hefty prison sentences.

One of the first people to do so was fashion designer Lakis Gavalas, who ceded a large plot in Kantza to the Greek state in order to settle a 17-million-euro tax debt.
