The clash between Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Governor of Attica Rena Dourou over staff reviews reflects the tension between the coalition government and the opposition.

The latest conflict emerged after the newly-elected Governor of Attica Rena Dourou announced that she would resist the government’s intention to re-examine the appointment procedures for thousand of municipal employees, with the Ministry responding that the inspections would take place even if judicial authorities have to be called in.

Dourou: «Look who’s talking»

Mrs. Dourou further argued on her facebook account that “those who established the clientelist state” are now accusing the District of Athens of covering for employees who used false certificates and diplomas to enter the public sector.

The SYRIZA politician added that false certificates and staff reviews are different matters and that the government is simply looking to carry out further dismissals. Mrs. Dourou was adamant and clarified that any employees found guilty of using false certificates would face the law.

Mitsotakis: «I am disappointed in the Governor»

Mr. Mitsotakis who appeared on SKAI claimed that he intends to carry out the inspection of thousands of municipal employees and hinted that he would prosecute any local government official who appointed employees who used false certificates.

He also claimed to be “disappointed» by Mrs. Dourou’s stance on the controversial matter. When asked whether the government would manage to carry out the troika-mandated dismissals in the public sector, Mr. Mitsotakis responded that he was confident.
