The archeologists undertaking the investigation of the ancient Greek tomb in Amphipolis uncovered two intricate caryatids on Saturday afternoon, according to a Ministry of Culture announcement.
The Ministry revealed that the two female statues were placed in front of a sealed entrance leading further into the tomb. The face of one of the two female statues is missing and it appears that the two statues symbolically discouraged people from entering the tomb.
The presence of the caryatids alone though has excited archeologists, as they are typically encountered in Ancient Athens and are not associated with Macedonia. Whether the damage is proof of the tomb being looted will be revealed later, as the excavation reveals further secrets; the two statues are still half buried.
The Culture Ministry also noted that support work is being carried out inside the tomb in order to ensure safety and that the security measures are being increased.
