Scientists from the National Technical School of Athens and the District of Attica are planning to turn abandoned railway lines into bicycle paths and pedestrian areas.

The first phase of the plans involves the conversion of the line between the Agioi Anargyroi and Mesogia stations, with the next phase involving an expansion towards Sounio. The full, three-phase program will cost 246.000 euros and will be complete by April 2015.

The new bicycle path and pedestrian areas will also be a preview of other similar developments that are currently being planned for other abandoned railway lines in the country.

The outgoing District Governor of Attica Yannis Sgouros commented that the project will help make archeological sites, Byzantine churches, wineries and local settlements accessible to the greater public.
