According to a report in the Jerusalem Post (which has been reprinted in the Simerini), an Israeli NGO has referred Turkey to the International Criminal Court over war crimes committed during the invasion of Cyprus.
The NGO argues that the Turkish invasion five days after the coup in 1974 was an illegal action and Ankara must address the dramatic increase of the Turkish population, namely settlers from 1966, which distorted the demographics in occupied territories.
In recent talks between the Greek and Turkish sides in Cyprus, the Cypriot Turkish leader Dervis Eroglu claimed that there were “no settlers” and that they must be included in the Turkish Cypriot population.
The referral appears to be in response to the “Mavi Marmara” case in 2010, when nine Turkish citizens were killed by Israeli forces.
