After a Wednesday afternoon meeting the dominant party in the SYRIZA coalition, Synaspismos has decided to ‘self-dissolve’ as part of the plan to transform SYRIZA into a unified political party. Despite the decision though, some voices of resistance to the ‘homogenization’ of SYRIZA, mostly reflected in Petros Lafazanis’ Left Platform, were echoed in the decision.
At the meeting it was decided that Synaspismos’ Central Committee would convene on the 8th of June and decide on dissolution and integration into the new unified SYRIZA. Surprisingly, the ‘Left Wave’ faction (which is aligned with Lafazanis’ Left Platform) proposed that the Synaspismos convention take place in mid-July, after the SYRIZA conference.
Despite being rejected, this proposal is indicative of the Left Wave and Left Platform’s intentions, of fighting the plans to unify SYRIZA, which could mean that the SYRIZA conference doesn’t pan out as SYRIZA and Synaspismos leader Alexis Tsipras expects.
The proposal could also be interpreted as the intraparty opposition attempting to curb the influence of Alexis Tsipras, by posing a number of political, strategic and tactical issues. The intent in this case is to increase influence in the new SYRIZA.
